Making the Most of Rainy Days
Mix energy levels
Do not stack three quiet activities back to back. Kids get restless. Alternate between active play and calm time. A good pattern is: active, snack, quiet, active, lunch, quiet, active, dinner.
Let kids choose
Give them two or three options and let them pick. Children cooperate more when they feel some control. You set the menu, they pick the order.
Keep transitions short
Have the next activity ready before you finish the current one. Cleanup takes longer than you think. Build in five minutes between activities.
Expect mess
Some activities will get messy no matter what you do. That is okay. Put down a sheet, use washable supplies, and accept that part of the fun is the chaos.
Common Mistakes to Skip
- Over-scheduling: Kids need unstructured time too. Leave gaps in the plan for free play.
- Only screen time: Screens are fine in moderation, but mixing in hands-on activities keeps kids engaged longer.
- Too many crafts: Crafts are great but they take setup and cleanup time. Two crafts per day is plenty for most families.
- Ignoring snacks: Hungry kids are cranky kids. Plan snack breaks into your playbook.
- Forgetting yourself: You need breaks too. Build in quiet activities where you can sit down for a few minutes.
